Description:
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest-ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and further Units are situated Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK), Rome (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain).

EMBL Grenoble shares the European Photon and Neutron Science (EPN) Campus with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) and the French national Institut de Biologie Structurale (IBS), whose complementary and integrated facilities provide a very rich environment for structural biologists.

EMBL is seeking to recruit a Staff Scientist in the Head of Unit’s Research Group at EMBL Grenoble, Prof. Kristina Djinovic Carugo. The Djinovic group is interested in the molecular mechanisms underlying the architecture and assembly of muscle sarcomeres, particular Z-discs and in microbial metalloenzymes involved in complete ammonium oxidation and protection from chemical damage. We use integrative structural biology methods including X-ray crystallography, small-angle X-ray scattering, electron microscopy and complementary biophysical and biochemical approaches on proteins and reconstituted complexes.

Your role
You will lead and contribute to research projects of the Djinovic group, specifically in areas of (but not limited to) protein expression (including eukaryotic hosts), purification, biochemical and biophysical characterization, as well as structural biology approaches. You will also contribute to grant applications and manuscript preparation, support of active grants, presentations of group activities at external meetings and training of young researchers in relevant methods and technologies. S/he will be able to develop her/his own projects primarily in the field of structural biology of muscle cytoskeleton.

Closing date: 15 July 2022
• Contract duration: 3 years
• Grading: 8
• Reference number: GR00186

You have
You should have a PhD in a relevant field and at least three years of postdoctoral work that has resulted in significant peer reviewed publications. Working experience and theoretical knowledge in molecular biology, protein expression in eukaryotic hosts and purification, biochemistry, molecular biophysics and structural biology approaches. Project management experience, excellent communication skills and the ability to supervise and collaborate with other research teams are essential. Good knowledge of desktop software applications and fluency in English are mandatory.

You might also have
Previous experience in complementary structural biology methods, cell biophysics approaches (e.g. FRET, FRAP, BiFC) and cell culture will be considered an advantage.

Why join us
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus.

What else you need to know
We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1900 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.

Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.

Please note that appointments on fixed-term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
